Wonderful, wide, mostly-level gravel spots with shaded spots overlooking Bear Creek. We stayed 2 nights after full days of fishing the nearby trout streams. Iowa now requests that you buy firewood where you burn it to avoid spreading a tree-killing pest, and the super-nice owners will bring fire rings to your site. The roads leading to the campground are all dusty gravel, but the campground is silent at night, with no traffic noise at all. We will be back again as soon as possible! What a gem!!!...Huge grassy sites, Awesome 2 acre man made lake that they call the pool, tube trips down the river (4 hour or 8 hour ride) and they actually let you use your own tube if you have one. There are some negatives. The pool and office close at 6 during the week (not sure about the weekend), be prepared to have no cell phone or internet service (they are working on the Wi-Fi) as you are in the middle of nowhere Iowa, dump station connection is odd...But those couple drawbacks are nothing compared to all the positives about this place. We would go back for sure, but it would have to be a extended stay (far from home). Great place! We camped here in a Motorhome.
Looking for a "boys weekend" of camping and canoeing. Picked this resort based because of location, user ratings and the fact that they also run the canoe shuttle here. We arrived very late on Friday night, but had called ahead for the site number. Wasn't too hard to find, even in the dark. Sites were large, had more than enough room for my hybrid, slide-outs and 14 pax van. Woke up in the morning and really realized what a great choice we'd made. It's a beautiful area and great campground. The owner was more than accommodating even though he had a family function that weekend. The only problem I had was that there was only one urinal, toilet and shower for each VERY rustic bath house (don't know what the women's bath houses had), and there were only two bath houses for 115 sites. This might explain why they were as dirty as they were. They weren't filthy: I just wasn't all that crazy about it when I had to go do my "business". In all, it was a great weekend and there's no doubt that I'd return. If I don't, it's not because I wasn't happy. It'd just be because I wanted to try something different. If you like the great outdoors, swimming, fishing, tubing and relaxing by the campfire with a wonderful ocean of stars, this is the place for you! Second time we have been here and love it! Will be going back for years to come! We camped here in a Motorhome.
We were a little concerned that there was only one review and it was SO wonderful. The only reason that I gave this a 7 is because it is truly camping. You cannot get cell phone coverage here or any TV on antennae. Satellite is spotty. However it is a beautiful site right on the river. They have canoe trips available. We took the 2 1/2 hour trip and it was a lot of fun. The owners are on site and very helpful. They will pump you out at your site for $20 or you can drive to the dump. We camped here in a Motorhome.
This is my family's favorite campground by far! We typically visit only once per summer because it is almost three hours from our house and we need a three day weekend to make it worthwhile. The setting is very wooded and natural it is absolutely beautiful. Over the last few years more and more of the best sites, along the Upper Iowa River, have been taken over by seasonal campers- I don't blame them they are great sites. There is a spring fed swimming lake that they call the pool that is huge! There is a large lodge type building that houses the office, snack shop, recreation area with a pool table and a few games and a limited amount of supplies. You can also rent canoes or inner tubes and they will shuttle you up river and you can paddle or float your way back to the campground, how relaxing! This is a great place to get away from it all! Kristi and Bob are the exceptional and very friendly owners and they always make everyone feel welcome. Last year when we camped here there was a family that lived quite a long way from the campground and their truck had broken down, either there was no place open or they couldn't get the part that they needed for their vehicle so the owners were going to let them stay in one of the cabins free of charge until they could figure something out! Now that is going above and beyond!! We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
Particularly pleasant during the week. Busy on weekends . If you want TV bring a dish, no cable or off the air. Dogs on leash applies more to some than others. Huge spring fed swimming pool. Upper Iowa is a good canoeing and fishing river. The resort rents lots of canoes on warm days-they have a shuttle. We camp here several times a year and enjoy it. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
