This campground is fairly new and the trees planted have just started to grow. This will be a very nice campground when it has some age on it. Some sites have full hook ups and others have water and power only with an easy to get to, dump station. Not a whole lot to do in the area as far as shopping etc., but that is not my thing lots of site seeing the country side and tubbing the river. We had a very nice stay quiet nights. The roads are driveable just be careful lots of curves not many inclines or down slopes. I pull a 30 footer with a four door, long bed dully and had no problems with roads or the campground. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
Beautiful park at 3000' elevation. Only 12 miles from West Jefferson where there is a WalMart, Lowes, and other grocery stores. All sites have electric, but water and sewer only at a few sites. The NC Parks website indicates facilities by site. We stayed a week and plan to go back. Price reflects a senior discount. Highway 221 is narrow and many curves, so slow is the way to go. We camped here in a Motorhome.
While we toured the RV campground (very nice), we stayed in the tenting area along the New River. The facilities were cleaned twice each day and were very well maintained. The staff, rangers, and volunteers were very friendly and visible throughout our visit. The site was large with privacy from neighboring sites. There was a 200 yard walk to the tent sites, but wheelbarrows were provided to haul gear. The visitor center had a nice informational display and movie. The sites had direct access to the New River. This was one of the cleanest rivers I have ever visited! We stayed with another family and the children had a great time, as did the adults. While we were there, the blackberries were available for picking and we had a wonderful cobbler. Overall, we highly recommend New River State Park at the 221 Access. We camped here in a Tent.
