This is a campground that is a bit past it prime. The water park area (additional $15) is really pretty nice. The rec. center is newer and nice. More activities could be planned. Prices in the store and snack bar are very high. Had a good Wi-Fi signal all the way down to the river. No cable on river front sites. Seem to stack people close for no apparent reason. The bathhouse (is cleaned very often). I gave it a low rating because it is old and run down. Toilets don't flush very well and the leads to some unsightly views and smells. The person who showed us our site was nice and friendly. None of the other staff were remotely friendly.
Great park. The restrooms are cleaned all day long and into the night. The Discovery Center has so much for the kids to do. Staff keeps them busy learning and having fun. The lake beach is clean and modern with full snack bar, restrooms and lifeguards. Boat ramp and fishing pier. Saw many deer. Boat rentals available (reserve in advance). Wi-Fi at the Discovery center. Sites large, gravel, fairly level, fire ring, tent pads and picnic table. Easy back-ins and pull thru sites.
This a real treasure. We stayed here and had a great time. They have the largest pool I've ever seen. The James River is nice and lots of fossils to hunt. Facilities were all clean and nice. This has an operating Plantation Museum and gift store. Camp has two sides. "A" is older, more shady with picnic table, fire ring, light pole, tent pad, water and stable 30 amps. The sites are irregular, gravel and not perfectly level. "B" the new side, has fewer trees, but still plenty. Sites are smaller, and paved. Stay on side "B" if you think a lot of rain is coming. Campground host(s) was nice and very helpful. Firewood is $3.00 per bundle and you will need two for a nightly fire. Small playground. Had digital television with us and rabbit ears. No problem picking up local channels. Pets fee of around $5/pet/night! BTW, camp store has great milkshakes. I'd give it a 10 if they leveled the old campsites a bit and cut the pet fee.
My score may not accurately reflect our like of this campground. Was hard to score. We had a great site on a canal and no direct neighbors. No grills but had fire ring and picnic table. Partial shade and level gravel sites. Not a whole lot to do for the kids. The bathrooms are very nice but are only cleaned once a day. They really need it twice. Only one paper towel dispenser and soap dispenser. Several toilets missing handles to flush and thus were quite disgusting. Manager was very nice but other staff in the store were not. Fire wood was $5 for small and $10 for large. We purchased the large and had plenty left after two days. Neighbors had large party and broadcast some NASCAR race late into the evening for all to hear. At other end of the campground someone was playing loud thumping music at 9:00 am Sunday morning. Campground has security but I guess he doesnt control noise. Nice fishing docks and decent beach.
