We loved our stay at Tom Johnson's. The campground is located right along a river, and we had views of Mount Mitchell right out our front window. There is a very nice clubhouse with comfy couches, 60" TV, free coffee all day, and a great cafe that servers excellent food for reasonable prices. Everyone is very friendly that works there. If you need to get service done on your RV, they'll work with your schedule to do the work during the day and move your rig back to your spot at night for you to stay in. Asheville is only 30 minutes away; Marion is about 5 minutes away. Very dog friendly. Our dogs never even had to be on a leash. We love it here, and will stay whenever we are in this part of NC. Were able to park our trailer in a separate lot for free within walking distance. Cost is usually $30/night, or $600/mo. One of the nicest RV parks we've stayed in.
The campground itself was OK, but the hosts were a total pain, and we eventually left before our month was up. IF YOU HAVE DOGS: DON'T STAY HERE! We have 2 dogs, 1 of which was a 3 month old puppy. We were yelled at for our dogs wetting on the grass! They said, "Can't you keep your dogs from wetting until after you've left the campground?" Are you kidding me? We left and went up the road to the falls and enjoyed ourselves there. Another couple we met, left for the same reason (they too had dogs) and went to a campground in Osoyoos. Also, we had to pay extra to park our trailer in a parking spot, as none of the pull throughs were long enough for us to stay connected. We will not stay here again.
We love it here! Only inexpensive place we could stay near Santa Barbara that could fit us (37' motorhome + 27' car trailer) and weekly rate is only $132/week ($22/night, pay for 6 nights and 7th is free) so ends up $19/night! Plenty of room on our site for the motorhome, trailer, jeep cherokee, and motorcycle, as well as a picnic table and bbq grill. Full hookups. Dogs are supposed to be $3/night extra, but they didn't charge us for ours. Only 17 miles up Hwy 154 from Santa Barbara and 10 miles from Solvang, Los Olivos, and wine country, 8 miles from big Indian Casino. Boat rentals available also. We love it here so much, we are staying for the max 90 days they will allow us! Not crowded either, plenty of space which is good since they don't take reservations.
Nice family-run campground. We showed up at 10pm and the owner took us to our spot and chatted w/ us on local places to check out- very friendly. We took our Jeep to tour Tombstone and Chiricahua Rocks National Park for the day and they let us leave our motorhome/trailer all day, returning around 6pm. We saved 50% w/ CampClub USA so was only $14. We'd stay here again for sure. Nice big pull-through and had no problem w/ our 65' of motorhome/trailer.
This campground is nice, especially for the money, but kind of small and tight. We needed to disconnect our trailer but were able to leave it in the adjacent parking lot free of charge. Came outside at night and there was a coyote running through the parking lot. This is the only campground in Big Bend National Park w/ full hook-ups, but is located 20 miles from the Chisos Mountains and 40 miles from Santa Elena Canyon. It is close to the hot springs which is about 2 miles away. Next time I visit the area, I'd probably stay in Terlingua which is closer to the western (and in my opinion more beautiful) side of the park. Terlingua is also centrally located to Big Bend Ranch State Park which is a must-visit if you come to the area.
Outstanding park! Complementary breakfast, and looooong pull through, easily accommodating our 65' of motorhome and trailer. Staff was very friendly. We had to take our motorhome next door to the RV dealer for an oil change and service and wanted to go to White Sands for the day. They allowed us to leave our trailer on the site until 5pm (usual late check-out is 3pm). We saved 50% off the regular rate w/ CampClub USA. We would absolutely stay here again if we come through Las Cruces.
This campground was beautiful. Very friendly staff, and the hot tub was hot! Nice workout room as well. There are a few golf holes on the property as well as a putting green. We usually need a pull-through as we have a 27' car trailer behind our 37' motorhome, but they had a parking lot that we were able to store it in at no extra charge. Unfortunately I believe they sold the property to develop houses on so it might not be here through the end of 2007. Cell phone reception was a bit spotty and we constantly dropped calls- although we have both Verizon and Tmobile phones.
