Stopped here for an overnight going to Boone NC. Nice park, several seasonal campers. We had a paved pull-through. Nothing close by the park at this exit. No road noise. Did not realize they were cash or check only. Had just enough to cover it. Good overnight stop or more if you need to be in the area.
Our group of seven camped here for a week, our second time at this campground. We LOVE this place. Sites can be small and unlevel, but the staff was great. They assisted us in backing in for a couple of tight spots. It rained a lot, and some sites could really use some more gravel to help with drainage. Cable worked great, Wi-Fi was not great, but better than last time. Had an issue with a dryer not working well, they refunded our money. The stream and shade here are just amazing. We used the coffee bar behind the office as our group hangout spot during the rain, worked out great.
This park was not what we were expecting. We stayed a week here (Sunday - Friday) in a reserved site (#93 in loop B). Our site was reasonably level, as were the ones close by. Campground is nice, but some sites can be very unlevel, be prepared. Trash can at each site, picked up daily. Most sites have picnic tables that cannot be moved. Be aware when positioning your unit/awning. It looks like all the bath houses except the one closest to us have been updated and kept clean. The B3 bath house is in poor repair and not cleaned well. Verizon cell service is one bar, at best. Wi-Fi is available only at the lodge. TV stations limited to PBS. The park does not charge an entrance fee. This is the first state park we have visited that did not charge a fee. The lack of a fee is obvious in the upkeep of the park. Overall, this is a poorly maintained park. Many of the facilities are in poor repair and not kept clean. The pool is nice, and in good condition, but check at the pool ticket booth for days of operation. It seems to change randomly and not posted anywhere else in the park. The lifeguards at the pool pay more attention to their friends hanging out and playing around than to the swimmers. They were so bad; I felt I had to make a formal complaint to the park office. We hiked on most of the trails in the park, and all had trash on the ground. I don't remember ever being in a state/federal park that was as poorly kept as this one. Other than the campground, there are very few trash cans throughout the park. Posted hours of operation for some services are not followed. The river swimming area can be dangerous. The concrete at the swim area and short dam is falling apart. There are many areas of exposed rusty metal rebar and reinforcing wire. We saw park staff driving around, but only once did we see a ranged outside, not in a vehicle. The park is poorly patrolled. Many hazardous rock areas have signs posted to stay off, but this is not enforced. Some observation areas have very poor or no guard rail protection. Common sense must be exercised in these areas. We may return in the future, as the area and scenery is nice. We now know better what to expect.
Our group of ten units spent a great week here. Great campground, very well kept. Gravel roads drain well in the rain. Covered areas for group meetings. Good location for seeing the surrounding area/attractions. 2 (HE) washers and dryers, could use more machines. Only negative is there is no sign on the main road. Make sure you follow the directions on the web site. Looking forward to returning to this campground.
Second time we have been here. Not much has changed. Fewer picnic tables, and now they charge to use the pool. It is really for the divers to train in, not for the campers to use as a swimming pool. Be aware that some of the back flow preventors on the faucets do not work correctly, and will cause an issue. Check the faucet before you set up in a spot. The place is very quiet, it was a great spot for our group of 9.
Our group of five spent a week here. We really liked this campground. Some sites can be tight to get into, but doable. This is a campground on the side of a mountain, so there are some tight turns and inclines. This is a very wooded, rustic setting. Our group had some 34’ rigs that did just fine. We had site C-5, with a 30’ rig. We parked the TV sideways in front, but fit just fine. We really like this site because of the access to the stream. Most of the “C” side sites have stream access; most of the “B” side stream sites do not. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The Wi-Fi was an issue, and the owner said it was being worked on. We had to go to the game room to connect. If Wi-Fi is an issue for you, I would call to check the status of the system update. We were on vacation, and it was not a “must” for us. We look forward to returning to the campground.
Our group of 6 camped here for a week in July. A couple of members had a problem with their reservations (made 8 months before). The staff worked to correct the problem, and still keep us all together in the same area. They ended up with nicer sites than they had reserved. We were in the full hook up sites on the stream (nice view). The sites are close together, but worked well for our group. The kids loved the pool and the playground. The game room was nice, but the few games they had usually did not work. The contractor who owns the games needs to do a better job on upkeep. The WI-FI worked well (a little slow, but not bad). The cable channels are few, but worked well. There is a new grocery store about 3 miles down the road from the campground. The staff was very friendly and helpful to us. When one of our group asked about a gas station where they could check the air in their trailer tires, the staff brought a portable compressor to the site to air the tires. The sites up the hill are more rustic, and there are some permanent sites also. Most of the permanents are grouped together. While they were not "resort" type set ups, they were well kept and clean. The road to the hill sites is gated, the lower sites are not. The staff said they have plans to gate the lower area. They are trying to figure a way to do it with out having traffic back up on the main road to get in. This location was great for sightseeing the surrounding area. We will stay here again in the future.
It is a nice, older campground. The dids loved the pool. We stayed here overnight on our way to VA. The only complaint I have is the placement of the sewer connection. Our dump valve is forward of the trailer wheels, and the sewer outlet was at the far rear corner of the site. It took a lot of hose to reach the outlet. I would have rated better if roads and sites were paved and level. The road and sites were gravel in OK to good shape. The site was not level, but not bad (one board off). We would stay here again.
We decided to stay at this campground because we were ready to stop for the day, and the kids wanted to swim. The staff was nice. The campground is a big sand lot under the trees. It was had to tell where the road stopped, and our site began. I would hate to be here when it rained. The pool was nice, the playground was OK. They have on site pizza and a coffee shop. While there was not anything wrong while we stayed here, it was WAY over priced for the quality of the services provided. For this price, I expect paved roads and paved level sites. Grass or mulch, not just sand everywhere. The pizza was OK, but the quality did not equal the price charged. We have stayed a nicer KOA's for less money with better conditions. We will not stay here again.
