Pros: On the waterfront. Very clean and modern facility. Full hookups including TV. Bathrooms and laundry facilities top notch but need more showers (see below). Central lodge quite nice with BBQ available. Cons: OBSCENELY expensive!! More than double the price of other campgrounds on the spit! One male staff member on duty in front who consistently makes people feel like he is doing them a favor by taking care of them. Not very welcoming at these prices! Showers -- at peak times better sign up the night before when you want to take a shower or you will wait a LONG time in the morning! 'Free Wi-Fi' -- very slow connection that becomes almost useless around dinner time and later. Free Wi-Fi much faster provided by Homer -- pitiful and cheap on their part. They could pay for more bandwidth for guests!
Colter Bay is stunningly beautiful and that alone is reason enough to stay here. RV campground fully booked so we used their Campground next door for our Eurvan Camper and stayed off the grid for a night. Site was wonderful, level, plenty of space to stretch out. Hiking was wonderful. Fellow campers collegial and wonderful camping etiquette. Bathrooms locally near sites were truly disgusting - Grand Teton Lodge Co should be ashamed, but only used for #2. Shower facilities, a hike away at the laundromat, were clean and excellent but charged for use. Supermarket super convenient on property. Avoid Ranch Lodge restaurant -- poor value, poor food prep, lots of complaints. Hopefully they will do better next year. Would and will stay there again!
Adequate campground for transit through Butte on way somewhere else. Staff were friendly and helpful. Site was level, adequate, and clean and close to restrooms. Wi-Fi was inappropriately advertised -- signal too weak to work only 50yds from main building! Showers and restrooms old and dated but clean. Noise from highway very considerable due to close proximity to highway. Would stay there again without hesitation while on my way elsewhere.
Staff very professional and helpful. Sites are unbelievable: right on the lake and close to town, quite stunning. Restroom facilities including bathroom and showers were the BEST we have ever used: a model for other campgrounds. BEWARE: This campground can be unbelievably windy so if the winds are up you might want to request a site away from the lake for both reduced wind and reduced humidity.
Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Campground is conveniently located, close to town, next to river, just off highway. Our site (?22) had a faulty GFC 20 amp receptacle and kept sparking and shorting out. We switched to the 30 amp plug and all was well. The bathroom and shower facilities, both men and women's, were the most disgusting and unsanitary facilities that my wife and I have seen in all our experiences camping, including state and government run campgrounds! The urinal and toilets were black. Dirt was strewn about the bathrooms not picked up. There was mold everywhere. The bathroom stalls had old toothpaste containers, food wrappers, suspicious wads of toilet paper strewn about. The unsanitary smell was -- unsanitary. There was a large diameter hose hooked up to a faucet that they apparently use to power hose down the facility much like a prison or concentration camp facility, they then leave water pooled on the floors and leave the hose by the sinks -- unbelievably disgusting. The floors had dirty water pooled up that you had to step into if you wanted to use the sinks. If you are a self contained RV and do not need to use the restroom/shower facilities the convenience and siting of this camprground would be hard to match if visiting Steamboat Springs. If you are tenting or staying in a Van Camper and need these facilities avoid this place at all costs! PS I understand that this facility is for sale so maybe that is why they have let it go?
