This is a beautiful park. Lots of kids activities, like smores night, reptile show, animal tracks and more. Wonderful hiking, even for kids. The best was the museum ($10 for the whole family) with a great bird observation area, including binoculars. The bathrooms were clean and sites were level. Only problem we noticed is that the campground is at the front of the park and runs parallel to a pretty busy highway, so you feel like you're camping, but there is quite a bit of traffic noise.
This is a beautiful place to take your children. We were there by accident on KY Kids Day. A totally free event for kids where they have tons of outdoor fun and even provide a free lunch. Even without the Kids Day event, it was a great campground. There is a really nice sandy beach within a short walk. The bathrooms were very clean. The only trouble we had was very little shade. Most sites are nicely shaded, but we were on the one road that seemed to have younger trees and therefore much less shade. Overall a great campground.
The campground itself wasn't too bad except for the extremely poor condition of the bath houses. They have notices posted that they are closed every morning for cleaning, yet they were not cleaned once in the 4 days we stayed. Even the "brand new" bath house in the upper area was very dirty and had a toilet stopped up. We chose this campground over a KOA, since they said they had a trout pond and fishing in the river. The Trout Pond they have on their website is a pay by the pound pond located next door. It was fun, but expensive with 4 kids. The fishing in the river is posted as fly fishing only (not practical for children) and catch and release. We were not told either of these facts when we called and spoke to them in person. My other complaint is the playground on the campground map is non-existent. The only playground is also next door at a "community park" and it is less than kept up. The swings are all broken and the merry-go-round barely moves. So for a "family campground" I would rate this very poorly. When camping with children I want clean bathrooms, a nice playground and easy fishing...and they don't have any of these. They do have nice shaded sights (in the lower area) and a beautiful river view, if you don't have children to entertain.
