There were numerous activities for the kids to do. BUT: our site was grass covered and very small and my idea of camping is not staring at my neighbor's sewer pipe all weekend long. The fire pits are old truck rims and the staff gave us many reminders to keep all firewood and flames inside of the rim. They drove by on their golf cart constantly which was very annoying! Much too cramped for my style. I can get more of a camp feel in my own backyard.
The campground is very close to area attractions and has one of the best outdoor play areas we have ever seen at a campground. The kids enjoyed playing softball and riding bikes. There are many large areas conducive to group camping.
The campground was clean and quiet. Our site was large and level. There is a playground area for the kids and hiking trails for the adults. The beach area has tall pines if you prefer shade and sandy open areas if you like the sun. The only drawback is that you have to cross the street to get to the beach, but overall a nice place to camp. We'll return their next season.
We went camping at Papoose with two other families who have been camping there for over 20 years. They raved about what a great place it was, all of the activities they had etc.. The campground is split down the middle by route 118. One side of the road has the office/snack bar/ballfield and pond. The opposite side of the road, where our site was is more wooded and has a couple small playgrounds/mini golf and pool. Our site was fairly close to rt 118 and noisy at times. The water level of the pond was quite low while we were there and as a result, the beach had a horrible odor of rotting vegetation so off to the pool we went, to find it very overcrowded with unsupervised teenagers. We found the same to be true with the playground equipment. Although they do offer a wide selection of activities, many come with additional costs which can quickly add up. The bathrooms became dirty quickly because of heavy use and the cleaning schedule did not keep up with use the facilities were getting. If I were to return, I would try for an off-peak time because when the place is full, the staff is just unable to keep up with maintaining its recreational and bathroom facilities.
The website and its description of the campground is quite misleading. The brook was stagnant as was the thickly weeded pond, so swimming was not an option. They had a new basketball court and mini golf course. My children, both under 6, were not allowed to use the mini golf. The rec room was closed during posted open hours. Bathroom facility although clean was very small with two toilets and two shower stalls. We stayed one night of our planned three. Management did refund our money for the other two nights.
We cannot say enough good things about our experience camping here. The pool is amazing, the staff is friendly and the grounds/sites are very clean. Our site was a w/e/s/ctv site close to the pool and so large that we could have fit another trailer on it at the same time! There was a free magic show for the kids one night we were there. We will be camping there again next season!
