This is a very old and unkept campground at Lake Mojave. The RV spots are tight and some are un-level. My slide was just short of my neighbor's concrete patio. The park is gravel roads, gravel sites and hardly any shade. Forget about Internet or cell phones since there is zero signal. It is a desert setting, short "downhill" walk to the lake with a hotel, boat launch, store and marina. Management appears to cater to the boaters while ignoring the RV'ers. Lots of vehicle traffic during all hours since many come to party at the Lake.

We just spent a weekend here. They gave me a Good Sam rate although I did not have my card handy. It was very nice. The free Wi-Fi only reaches to certain areas of the park. It seems that is being corrected. The pool appears to be new but small. Shopping is minutes away in the neighboring small towns. Beautiful scenery, must be breath taking in the fall. The Juniata river is on one side of the park and an old boating canal on the other offering a free canal boat ride to campers. There are sunny and shaded sites. The grass is lush but needed mowing. Lots of wildlife to see. There are many friendly seasonals and their sites are well maintained. The new manager and employees were very nice and friendly. This is a wonderful quiet and relaxing park from the reservation process to the check out. The staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The road signs direct you to the Locust campground but it recently changed ownership and name. You can tell the new owners are making improvements. The views are amazing!

Very well maintained Campground. All sites are in a line along the shooting range and may be disturbing to late sleepers. All sites and facilities are extremely well cared for and shows pride of management and workers. Beautiful night time views of Las Vegas, but the drive is longer than it appears.

This is a Diamond In The Rough. Well maintained, well designed for an urban park. Real professional management.

The poster of Aug 2010 must have been at a different location. All the other posters are right on. This place is terrible! Roadways were horrible, toilets stink, debris and trash all over, fire pits loaded with trash and beer cans. If there was a rating lower than 1, this place gets it.

Shields is a great bargain for its location. Civilian rates are about $2 more than military. Sites are very big especially in the Paradise Cove section. Their are two fishing piers on either end of the facility as well as a marina which is being modernized. Although Civilians are accepted, the military and retired are given, and should be given, priority. A new Manager was hired in September and apparently doing a nice job. She has added activities that were wanted by the guests and is still accepting suggestions for more activities. All base facilities are within walking or quick driving distance and the newly trained staff has learned a lot about customer service and hospitality. It is usually windy and therefore we were unable to open our awnings, but you learn to live with it. Lots of very good but inexpensive restaurants in the local area and a great little sandwich shop on base called the Flight Deck.

Great cozy place with a small customer oriented staff. Escort to the site. Office is very helpful with things and places to see. Park is very well maintained by an Hands On Owner. We stopped here with another an RVer friend who is a fussy type of guy, and he was pleased with the accommodations as well.

The Park accepts the General public, not military only as advertised. It is on the Navy Base and therefore it is safe and secure. They have added new management and it is obvious things are changing for the better with activities and programs being added. All sites are within 200 yards of the Gulf of Mexico and if you like salt water fishing, this is the place to be. The park offers rentals of all watercraft as well as good fishing gear and bait. Sites are very large and roomy and Guests and staff are very friendly, while the mosquitoes are not. Bring plenty of repellent. The health spa is very well equipped and the golf course and first class clubs on base are open to all guests. This park is the best kept secret in south Texas. Top notch accommodations at Military prices.
