Lovely location, but not maintained. Massive and deep potholes in the road through the park. I don't know if a big rig could make it. There were stumps in the middle of sites so it was very difficult to park, and they were very uneven. It could be a great place; it's close to the water, in a forest with large private sites. But it needs a lot of work. We stayed there because it was close to Anchorage for returning our RV in the morning. That would be the only reason to stay. I wouldn't stay here again.
The campground is along the river so it was nice to go for walks and watch the ducks and geese. The place is quiet and clean. The sites are a decent size and fairly level. The 1st night we were in a large site, the next night was much smaller. It's near a busy road but we didn't hear the traffic noise. Close to shops and groceries. Convenient to U of A also. We came back for a 2nd night so would obviously recommend it.
Lovely location, right on a river so several folks were fishing right there along the bank! Big kids and little kids! Our site was wide and level. Lots of trees. Wonderful spot for families: kids could fish, play in the river, throw rocks and just burn off energy. Interesting antiques inside the store. There were only 4 or 5 bathrooms which could be problematic when the campground is full. Only 50% full while we were there. Had a very enjoyable stay.
I would have given this campground a 10 if there were more showers available. It's a wonderful location right on the bay. Our site was just below the one and only shower for all 300 sites. The sites were level. Odd that the utilities were not on the first row immediately on the bay, but one row back. Because the campground was only 25% full, no one parked in front of us. It was great to sit in our RV and watch the boats come and go, the otters playing on the water, and people taking an evening stroll. A bald eagle flew over one day as well.
In all fairness, Bear Paw looked like the other campgrounds in Valdez; more like a used RV lot than a campground. Pretty ugly. Very unfortunate since Valdez is such a lovely town. The hosts were very nice, the restroom/showers were clean and the sites were level, but these things can't compensate for the ugly parking lot appearance.
If there was electric and water I'd give this campground a 10! A lovely campground, with spacious sites, trees and shrubs to offer privacy and very quiet and clean. I thought $4 for a shower was steep but since the site was only $12, I can't complain. Enjoyed our stay very much. I highly recommend.
The campground looked like a lovely green pasture which was a welcome sight after the gravel parking lot in Valdez. However, the sites were terribly uneven. The worst of all was the noise created by the host's family. Her husband was worked on car in the garage with music blasting. Their son drove motorcycle up and down the road and across the campground. Their little girls careened through the campsites in a little cart crashing into picnic tables. We complained but nothing changed. Avoid!
