Stayed here Thanksgiving 2006. It is a not-for-profit campground. Not sure what that means... looks like a couple of hippies that run it and they get "volunteers" to help with the small menagerie of animals and the restaurant. We would probably stay her again because it is remote and up on the mountain. We day tripped to Clayton and Highlands while staying there.
It doesn't get much better. Sites are close but they try to screen them with vegetation. No racoons here to take your food! No mosquitoes for that matter. This is our favorite place to go but you have to plan ahead: it is always booked!
Hard to back in to your site if they are filled to capacity. Very friendly staff and the other campers are helpful if you need help backing in! Beach is RIGHT THERE- you can't get much closer and still have shade trees. We loved this place. It used to be private but the county has taken it over. It's located in a residential area, which makes you think you took a wrong turn getting there. This place is a gem.
Our favorite place to go! I hate to review it so honestly (that will make more folks want to go and make it harder for us to get a reservation)! It is truly a gem. Camp hosts are so friendly. Beach is gorgeous and lots of nice shopping nearby. We are sad to hear that the State of Florida considers this a "non-money maker" campground ( it costs the State to keep it going - I say, so what!). There is talk about cutting the budget for toilet paper and soap in the restrooms at State Parks! Even if the Florida Legislatures cut the budget, I'll be back!
Our site was was sunken down and uneven (good thing it didn't rain). Sites with a concrete pad are not much better and full hookups are few. Sites are on top of each other and tent campers are mixed in with RV's. Strange mix of campers - some looked like they live there. If you like tatoos, smoking, loud music between 9am -10pm, oh yeah and NASCAR- then this is the park for you.
We camp here several times a year and always have a great time. Beware that if quiet is important, the sites close to the bus stops are noisy until late at night. We always request to be far away from them. Birds and bunnies aplenty. The restrooms are spotless. Our 3 year old likes the pony rides and playgrounds. They have great hiking trails (paved and dirt) and fireworks at the waterfront. The main pool is a little disappointing when compared to what is offered at the Disney hotels. Maybe one day they will update it.
