We've stayed here three times and would definitely stay again. I found this park looking for a place where you could camp and bike directly to the New River Trail. It is so much more than a campground! The owners welcome you and provide homemade muffins for your first morning breakfast. They often offer weekend social events, like local music or ice cream. There is a porch with rockers at the office that overlooks the stream and a water wheel. The bathrooms, always very clean, include a shower, sink and toilet. Since most people use their RV bathroom, we usually don't have to wait for one. I wish this place would remain a "best kept secret."
This is a great campground for families or couples. The family that owns this campground takes pride in providing a fun, friendly atmosphere, great service and very clean bathrooms. We stayed here on Memorial Day weekend and enjoyed an ice cream party and tie-dying t-shirts. There is also a hiking trail from the campground to the Yadkin River. The campsites are mostly shady. Some sites are a little small, but a few have been expanded by the addition of decks for picnic tables. Though the campground was quite full this weekend, nights were quiet. There is much to do in this area as well. Wineries, restaurants, Pilot Mountain, Mt. Airy and Winston-Salem are within easy driving distance.
We had wanted to stay at Dan Nicholas for some time, and we were not disappointed. There is quite a demand for sites in the fall, so I made a reservation back in the summer. Their policy is that you pay for your stay when you make the reservation. The rates are very reasonable -- $24 a night for non-county residents. Campsites are large and shaded. No sewer hookups, but there is a waste dump station. The activities in the park are great: miniature train, carrousel, gem mining, wildlife center, paddle boats, hiking and more. Families can enjoy the park and return to the campsite when the kids need a break. Beautiful, rural setting. Quiet at night. Friendly, helpful staff and hosts. Well worth a visit.
