Despite the reserve-on-line system which we used, make sure you are aware that check in (especially during peak season) takes a very, very long time. We waited, along with a parking lot full of other campers, for over two hours to check in for a weekend. The park employees were very nice, but the wait meant most of us were hooking up in the dark, even after having arrived hours before sunset. The campground was clean, the sites were level, and there were nice hikes and swimming areas. We found the Old Garner area to be surprisingly quiet.
We stayed on the campground side across the road from the river, which meant more privacy and big spaces, but you have to drive over to the river to kayak or swim. Restrooms are far away from some sites, but clean. We were here right after a huge storm, so there were many trees down, but overall, this was a very nice park to visit. We saw more wildlife here than we have in all the recent parks combined.
Very handy to the hill country location, level sites, and helpful park host. Be prepared to use your own RV bathroom, because the city-park restrooms are a bit rustic. Good deal for the money. Quiet campground with many golfers.
We had a water, sewer, electric site that was less private than the water and electric, but roomy. We had trouble with cell phone reception on the campground, but could get service up on Skyline road. We used WiFi at the lodge. The park was clean and quiet and the bathroom showers were hot. We brought our dog and enjoyed the hikes over to Fort Davis.
The big rig pull-through sites are less private, but we had a very private shady spot for our smaller travel trailer on a loop. Bathrooms, however, were far away from the loop, so we used our own facilities. Very clean park. Lots to do, and good hikes for families and dogs.
The RV area was shady, grassy, and relatively level. The outhouse was clean. This campground is alongside the small Real County Airport, as well as very near the Frio River. We enjoyed the hang gliding competition that was occurring, and had fun with our dog in the Frio river. The owners have a few houses to rent as well, and are very helpful. The Frio River and Canyon are lovely, quiet and unspoiled.
