The new owners have been here for a year and are working hard on making the campground better. They are very friendly folks and hope to offer a much nicer stay for everyone in the future. We were happy to get 50 amps and a clear sky for our DirecTV satellite dish, and the rates are reasonable for this area. The only downside for us is the lack of sewer. However, there's a dump station and pump-outs are available.
We needed a place to get satellite access, and this campground seemed like the only choice. Our first site (#13) was nice in that we didn't share utilities with another unit, so we had a grassy space on the driver's side. And the shared grassy patio area on the passenger side was large enough for two RVs, with nice considerate people in the next site. We had to move for our last 3 nights because of a rally coming in. This site (#7) was a whole different situation. The patio-sharer had taken over the entire grassy area and did not share! And the utility sharer parked very close to us, so we felt squeezed!
The earlier review of this RV park is the reason we stayed here. Only one site of the 12 was occupied when we arrived. A county maintenance worker stopped in his truck with useful info about the location of the drop box across the street. Sites are clean and level, with no satellite obstructions. Hookups are all at the back of the sites.
We came in without reservations on our way to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque and got a back-in site. They gave us the Escapees discount and were very friendly and efficient during check-in. Views are beautiful from the top level of the park. Although close to I-25, it was extremely quiet overnight. WiFi is very good.
We were surprised to find a site available, due to the big Escapees rally starting at the Camplex. We'd planned to stay at Wal-Mart, but 99 degrees prompted us to seek electricity for air conditioning. The first site assigned us was very unlevel and had a low-hanging tree. The site we stayed in was in the clear - no shade but adequate for overnight. Gillette doesn't offer many choices for RVers, so this would be where we'd stay again. But I'd prefer to just drive through town and stay elsewhere.
Gillette needs another RV park. With only two choices, since the huge Cam-Plex is open only for special events, it's difficult to find a place to stay. We got one of two available 30 Amp sites left, and it was narrow and short. The park is mostly filled with local workers. It's okay for an overnight stay, but we probably won't come here again. Staff was friendly.
This hostess was so helpful to us. We stayed here a week, then extended for another two weeks while my husband recovered from falling off a ladder. She kindly prorated the monthly rate for us. There are lots of area workers staying here, and the grounds aren't maintained as well as they should be. But it's conveniently located near shopping, restaurants and the doctors' offices. Highway noise wasn't a problem because we were far enough away from it. We occasionally heard cars racing at the fairgrounds on weekends.
